Using Bands with Large Groups or Teams

When working with large groups of individuals or teams it can be difficult finding enough space and equipment to train them efficiently. Simple bodyweight exercises are good, but they only take you so far. And not every coach has the luxury of having 8-10 power racks in a 10,000 square foot facility. This is where having a variety of bands can help solve that problem.

As a coach you always need the right tools for the job. If all you’ve got is a hammer, then everything becomes a nail. Bands will add another tool to your tool belt and help you provide greater results and variety to your athletes, and can be used virtually anywhere.

We’ve worked with teams consisting of up to 30-50 athletes at a time and by having the bands it gave us an infinite amount of exercises relating to their needs and goals we could use each session.

As an example, we’ve started teams off in their warm-up for a lower body workout using the bands for mobility exercises to open up their hips, activation exercises like band good-mornings to get their posterior chain firing, and injury preventative exercises such as the banded TKE to help strengthen and protect their knees. If you then chose to do speed and agility work, the bands can be a great way to add resistance to the drills. Next we began the main lift where we worked up to a maximal weight in the box squat using bands attached as accommodating resistance. The bands provided a greater overload at the top of the lift, increased the bar speed, and taught the athlete to accelerate through the resistance, which is very important for any athlete.

Then we went to supplemental and accessory exercises using bands for pullthroughs, bent over rows, abdominal work, as well as lying band leg curls in addition to some free weight exercises. Afterwards we finished up with a team stretch using the bands to cool down and stretch out their lower body.

All in all the bands provided us with a greater variety and a multitude of new exercises which keeps the athletes freshly stimulated and helps them develop even better results!
